HARTFORD OPEN 2009: WELCOME TO THE HO!

Missing: Steve Sikorski (2nd biggest upset); Adam Townsend (3rd biggest upset); and Ed Stewart (1st rank above seed).
Over the weekend of 19-21 June 2009, 84 players took part in organizer Terry Kang Rau's inaugural tournament: Hartford Open 2009 in Windsor, CT. The wide-open nature of this event led to a rating span from 631 to 1906, and the early round pairings were rewarding and challenging for everyone in the mix. Stefan Rau, rated well over 1800, fell to Michael Kapernaros (1230), who was playing at only his second tournament. NASPA co-president Chris Cree (almost 1900) barely eked out round 1 and 2 wins against Bob Blyler (1058) and Shelley Ubeika (1262). Close calls for him and wonderful opportunities for them, which sums up the appeal of an open format.

down the computer end of things while Terry jumped in to play to even us out after a last-minute dropout. The games began at 2pm on Friday, which made playing twenty games overall a reasonable goal. Seven games were played on Friday, eight on Saturday, and five on Sunday. Terry secured a lovely venue in Windsor, CT, and on her own dime brought in a DJ Saturday night for an 80's dance party that was a huge hit! The non-dancers played a fast-paced game of anagrams to the tune of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and many more!
We hope that Terry continues to organize events at her soon-to-be-new home base of
Baltimore, MD. She said that she so enjoyed the venue and the crowd that she would consider flying up to run another one next year!

Sherrie Saint John is a former NSA Director of the Year and the administrator of crossword-games-pro. She directs a handful of tournaments a year and is the organizer of the Boston Area Tournament (BAT) and the Cape Cod Tournament.
